Key takeaways

  • Deleting a regular chat does not remove a separately saved Library file. [1–3]
  • Chat deletion and Library-file deletion start separate retention processes, each subject to OpenAI’s documented exceptions. [1–3]
  • Temporary Chat uploads are not saved to Library while the conversation remains temporary. [1][4]
  • Deleting content, removing saved Memory, and turning off model improvement are separate controls. [5–7]
  • Project files, custom GPT knowledge, and connected Google Drive items follow their own rules. [1][2][8]

Deleting a chat and deleting a file are now separate actions

The answer depends on where the file still exists. When ChatGPT Library is available, an eligible file uploaded to or created in ChatGPT can be saved separately from the conversation that used it. OpenAI’s current Library and retention documentation explicitly says that deleting the chat does not delete that saved Library file. [1][2]

That makes four controls easy to confuse:

  • Chat deletion removes a conversation from your account view and starts the chat-deletion process.
  • Library deletion removes the separately saved file from your main Library and starts the file-deletion process.
  • Memory removal deals with information ChatGPT may use for personalization.
  • Model-training opt-out changes whether eligible new content can be used to improve OpenAI models.

One action does not automatically perform the other three.

Chat deletion vs Library deletion

ActionWhat happens to the chat? What happens to a Library file?
Archive chatIt stays in the account under the same retention rules and remains searchable. It stays in Library.
Delete chatIt disappears from the account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to OpenAI’s documented exceptions.A separately saved Library copy remains.
Delete Library fileThe chat is not automatically deleted. The file leaves the main Library immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to documented exceptions.
Use Temporary ChatThe conversation stays out of normal history unless you save it; OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. An uploaded file is not saved to Library while the chat remains temporary.

What happens when you delete a ChatGPT chat?

Open the chat history, use the conversation’s more-options menu, choose Delete, and confirm. ChatGPT removes the conversation from your account view immediately. OpenAI then schedules it for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days. [3]

That 30-day wording is not an unconditional guarantee. OpenAI documents exceptions when the chat has already been de-identified and disassociated from the account, or when it must retain data longer for security or legal obligations. A deleted chat cannot normally be restored through ChatGPT or OpenAI Support. [2][3]

Archiving is different. It removes the conversation from the regular sidebar without deleting it, and the archived chat remains searchable. Archiving does not change the chat’s retention period. [3]

Why can the uploaded file still be in Library?

Library is a separate retained-file location. OpenAI says files uploaded to or created in ChatGPT can be saved there when the feature is available. Those files remain available independently of the conversation until you manually delete them or an applicable workspace retention policy removes them. [1][2]

This does not mean every file processed by every ChatGPT feature must appear in Library. Availability can vary by account, region, workspace permissions, and feature. The practical check is simple: open Library and see whether the file is listed. If it is, deleting only the conversation was not the file-removal step.

How do you actually delete a saved Library file?

OpenAI’s current instructions are:

  1. Open Library.
  2. Select the file you want to remove.
  3. Choose Delete or the trash icon.

The file disappears from the main Library view immediately. OpenAI says deleted Library files are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, unless they have already been de-identified and disassociated from the account or must be retained longer for security or legal reasons. [1]

If your Library includes Recently deleted, you may be able to restore the file before permanent deletion or use Delete forever for an earlier permanent-deletion request. Do not assume that view is available on every account. [1]

Deleting the Library file does not automatically remove the chat that used it. If the same information remains in a conversation, saved Memory, Project, custom GPT, or connected source, deal with that location separately.

What about Temporary Chat?

A file uploaded while a conversation remains temporary is not saved to Library. The conversation stays outside normal chat history unless you choose to save it, and it is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary. OpenAI may still keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. [1][4]

If you save the Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat. OpenAI says eligible uploaded files may then also be saved to Library, subject to feature availability and storage rules. From that point, the saved conversation follows the account’s personalization and model-improvement settings. [4]

Temporary Chat is therefore not a promise that OpenAI retains nothing, and its rules are specific to ChatGPT. For a separate platform comparison, DECODISTA’s Gemini Temporary Chat and activity controls explainer covers Google’s different policies.

What about files in Projects?

Project files follow a different retention path. OpenAI says files added to a Project are retained until the Project or file is deleted, or an applicable workspace policy removes them. After deletion, associated data is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days unless security or legal obligations require longer retention. [2][8]

Deleting a Project removes its chats, instructions, and files stored only in that Project under those rules. A file also saved separately in Library continues to follow Library retention, so check both locations when the goal is removal. [8]

What about custom GPT knowledge files?

A knowledge file attached to a custom GPT does not follow the deletion of an ordinary conversation with that GPT. OpenAI’s current retention page says custom GPT knowledge files are retained until the GPT is deleted. After deletion, the associated data is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to longer security or legal retention. [2]

Use the current GPT builder’s knowledge controls when managing those files. Do not assume that deleting one chat removes the GPT’s underlying knowledge source.

What about Google Drive files shown in Library?

Connected Google Drive items remain associated with the original Drive source. OpenAI says they cannot be deleted from ChatGPT as though they were uploaded Library files; manage or delete the original item in Google Drive instead. [1]

Deleting the ChatGPT conversation does not delete that original Drive file. It can remove the conversation and connected-app data retained within that conversation under OpenAI’s deletion rules, but it does not erase the source data from Google Drive. [3]

Does deleting a chat remove ChatGPT Memory?

Not necessarily. OpenAI says a saved memory can be stored separately from chat history, so deleting the original conversation does not automatically delete that separate memory. Library files and connected apps can also be sources for personalization where the relevant features are supported and enabled. [5]

For fuller removal, use current Memory controls to remove the remembered information, delete the original chat, and remove the information from other places where it remains, such as Library or a connected app. OpenAI notes that these updates can take time to propagate and that logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. [5]

Does turning off model training delete chats or files?

No. Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone → Off changes whether eligible new conversations can be used to improve OpenAI models. It does not delete saved chats, Library files, Projects, or Memory. [6][7]

For personal ChatGPT services, eligible content may be used to improve models depending on the account’s setting. OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. Feedback is a separate caveat: if a user submits product feedback, the associated conversation may be used for improvement even after opting out. [6][7]

This setting is a prospective model-improvement control, not a historical exposure checker and not a replacement for deleting information from the places where it is stored.

A simple deletion map

Where the information isWhat you generally need to remove
Regular or archived chatDelete the chat; archiving alone keeps it.
Library fileDelete the file from Library separately.
Saved MemoryRemove the remembered information using current Memory controls, then remove relevant source material where it remains.
Project fileRemove the file or delete the Project using Project controls; separately saved Library copies follow Library rules.
Custom GPT knowledgeManage the knowledge source in the GPT builder; deleting an ordinary chat is not enough.
Connected Google Drive itemManage the original file in Google Drive; ChatGPT cannot delete the original.

Every deletion remains subject to the retention rules and exceptions that apply to that location. [1–8]

Privacy checklist before uploading sensitive files

  • Check whether the file has been saved to Library.
  • Use Temporary Chat only when its documented history, file, personalization, and safety-retention behavior fits your goal.
  • Review Memory separately from chat history.
  • Review Improve the model for everyone separately from deletion controls.
  • If complete removal is the goal, remove the information from every relevant source rather than assuming one deleted chat covers them all.
  • Keep an independent copy of anything important before deleting it; deleted chats cannot normally be restored.

FAQ

Does deleting a ChatGPT chat delete uploaded files?

Not when the file remains saved separately in Library. Delete the conversation and the Library file separately if you want to remove both. Each deletion is then subject to OpenAI’s retention rules and documented exceptions. [1–3]

Why is my file still in ChatGPT after I deleted the conversation?

The file may have been saved to Library independently of the chat. Open Library and check for it there. Deleting the chat alone does not remove that saved copy. [1][2]

How do I permanently delete a file from ChatGPT Library?

Open Library, select the file, and choose Delete or the trash icon. It leaves the main Library immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to OpenAI’s documented exceptions. If your account has Recently deleted, it may also offer Delete forever. [1]

Are files uploaded in Temporary Chat saved to Library?

Not while the conversation remains temporary. If you save it as a regular chat, eligible files may then be saved to Library, depending on availability and storage rules. [1][4]

Does deleting a chat remove ChatGPT Memory?

Not necessarily. A saved memory can exist separately from the chat that contributed to it. Remove the memory through current Memory controls and remove the information from any other relevant source where it remains. [5]

Does turning off “Improve the model for everyone” delete uploaded files?

No. It is a model-improvement preference for eligible new content, not a deletion control. Chats, Library files, Projects, and Memory must be managed separately. [6][7]

What happens to Google Drive files shown in ChatGPT Library?

They remain associated with the original Google Drive source and cannot be deleted from ChatGPT like uploaded Library files. Manage the original in Google Drive. Deleting the ChatGPT conversation does not delete the Drive file. [1][3]

Are Project and custom GPT files handled the same way as normal chat uploads?

No. Project files are retained until the Project or file is deleted or a workspace policy removes them. OpenAI says custom GPT knowledge files are retained until the GPT is deleted. Neither is removed simply because one ordinary chat is deleted. [2][8]
