Temporary Chat is a choice for one conversation. Turning Keep Activity off changes how your future ordinary conversations are handled. Both limit what becomes part of your saved Gemini history, but neither means Google stores nothing. History: what you can return to
History is the collection you can open again. For personal accounts, Google’s tools for finding and managing saved chats require activity saving to be enabled. Switching it off changes that experience; an absent conversation list is not proof that all older records were deleted. Google’s chat-history guide
A temporary conversation is deliberately disposable from your perspective. Google says you cannot return to it after leaving. If you need a packing list or a useful explanation later, copy the part you need before closing it. Remember that your copy then has its own storage location. Temporary Chat help
For example, a one-off question about a surprise gift suits a temporary session. A project you plan to revisit needs a deliberate record-keeping choice.
Retention: what may remain after a chat disappears
With activity saving enabled, the standard auto-delete interval is 18 months. You can select three months, 36 months or no automatic deletion, and delete records yourself. Google’s activity controls
Google’s current Privacy Hub says Temporary Chats and chats created while Keep Activity is off are retained with your account for 72 hours. It also says Gemini can use the last 24 hours of the chat as context when responding. The 24-hour figure describes the context available for replies; it is not the retention period. Treat 72 hours as the documented short-term chat window, not an all-data erasure guarantee. Google’s broader retention policy allows longer storage for purposes such as security and legal obligations, and explains that removing data from view and completing deletion are different stages. Model improvement and training
With activity enabled, Google can use saved activity to develop services and train AI models. With it disabled, future chats are excluded from model improvement unless you submit feedback. Gemini Apps Privacy Hub

Training changes the system; personalisation changes how it responds to you. Those are separate controls.
Personalisation: Memory and saved instructions
Gemini’s Memory feature can draw on earlier conversations. It requires activity saving to be enabled, along with an eligible personal account. Turning Memory off is a narrower choice if your aim is to stop references to past chats while retaining a searchable history. It does not, by itself, switch off the separate activity control. A useful distinction is:
- “Stop using my previous conversations” → check Memory.
- “Remove that preference I saved” → check your instructions.
- “Keep this one conversation out of future personalisation” → start a temporary session.
Feedback and human review: the exceptions
Feedback can include the conversation. A response rating or report can carry more than your written comment: Google’s feedback guide includes associated prompts and answers, plus relevant uploaded or connected-app content. For activity-off chats, that matters because of the training exception above. Current Temporary Chat instructions say response feedback is unavailable; do not assume the same feedback controls exist in both modes. Temporary Chat help
Safety review remains possible. Google may use human reviewers for protection and safety even in these modes. Reviewed chats and related data, including reviewed feedback, can be retained for up to three years after being disconnected from your account. Deleting your activity does not remove those copies. “Disconnected from your account” describes how a record is handled. It does not make a name or address you typed into the conversation harmless to share.
What happens to older conversations?
Switching off future saving does not itself clear your previous history. Google offers separate choices to disable saving alone or combine that change with deletion. You can also delete selected periods or individual records. Google’s activity management guide

Before typing, ask yourself:
- Which account am I using? Confirm personal versus organisation-managed.
- Will I need this conversation later? Decide how you will retain the useful output.
- Do I want it influencing later replies? Choose the appropriate history and Memory controls.
- Does the prompt contain unnecessary identifiers? Remove details the task does not need.

Work and school accounts: check a different set of rules
Do not apply the personal-account table to an employer or school account. Your Workspace edition determines the applicable protections, and an administrator can control conversation retention. For qualifying Workspace use, Google states separate restrictions on human review and on using customer content for generative-AI training outside the organisation without permission. Is Temporary Chat anonymous?

Can I keep normal history and make only one chat temporary?

Will Gemini forget something if I just ask it to?

Why is a setting missing on my work account?
