Gemini Memory: How to Turn It Off and Delete What It Remembers

Gemini's Memory, Keep Activity, Connected Apps and Temporary Chat are separate controls. Turning Memory off stops past-chat personalization but does not delete your chat history.

Key takeaways

  • Turning Memory off stops past-chat personalization; it does not erase chat history. [1]
  • To remove a remembered fact from past chats, Google says to delete every chat containing it. [1]
  • Memory requires Keep Activity, but the two controls do different jobs. [1][2]
  • Information from a Connected App may require both deleting relevant chats and disconnecting the app. [1][3]
  • Per-chat Personal Intelligence and Temporary Chat solve different privacy needs. [3][5][6]

What is Gemini Memory?

Gemini Memory is the part of Personal Intelligence that can use earlier Gemini conversations to understand more about you and personalize later responses. Google lists it separately from information in Connected Apps and from preferences saved as Instructions for Gemini. [1][4]

Memory is not simply another name for chat history. A chat can remain in Gemini Apps Activity even when Memory is off, and other personalization sources can remain available. The practical distinction is:

Control or actionWhat it doesWhat it does not do
Turn Memory offStops Gemini from using memory of past chats for personalization.Does not delete past chats or globally switch off every Personal Intelligence source.
Delete relevant chatsRemoves selected conversations from Gemini Apps Activity and stops their remembered information from being used after any documented delay.Does not automatically disconnect a Connected App that can supply the information again.
Turn Keep Activity offStops future chats from appearing in normal Activity and makes past-chat Memory unavailable.Does not mean zero retention or automatically delete older activity.
Turn Personal Intelligence off for one chatStops Memory, Instructions and Connected App personalization for that chat, where available.Does not make the chat temporary or stop it from being saved to Activity.
Use Temporary ChatKeeps that conversation out of normal recent chats and Activity and prevents personalization under Google’s documented rules.Does not mean zero retention; Google retains it with the account for 72 hours.

Past-chat Memory currently requires an eligible user who is at least 18, signed in with a personal Google Account, and has Keep Activity on. Google says it is unavailable for work, school and supervised accounts. It is limited to the Gemini mobile and web apps, Gemini in Chrome where available, and Gemini on a smartwatch; it is not available in certain experiences such as Gems or Live chats. [1]

How to turn Gemini Memory off

Google’s current desktop path is:

  1. Go to gemini.google.com.
  2. Open Settings & help.
  3. Select Personal Intelligence.
  4. Turn Memory off.

These are Google’s documented web steps as of October 5, 2026. Older screenshots or guides may use labels such as Personal context or Your past chats with Gemini; follow the current Personal Intelligence → Memory wording shown in the account. [1]

Do not assume that a missing toggle is a malfunction. Eligibility, supported surface and rollout can affect what appears.

What changes when Memory is off?

Gemini should stop using memory of past Gemini chats to personalize future responses. Google’s Memory help also says you can ask, “Did you use any info from past chats?” when you want to check whether a response drew on that source. [1]

Turning Memory off does not disable every other source of personalization. Connected Apps can still supply account information when connected, and Instructions for Gemini remain a separate preference source. Keep Activity also remains its own storage and data-use control. [2–4]

That separation matters for model improvement too. Memory off is not a training opt-out. Google’s documentation ties model-improvement behavior to Keep Activity, Temporary Chat, feedback and other data controls—not to the Memory toggle by itself. [2][5]

Does turning Memory off delete past chats?

No. Past conversations remain governed by Gemini Apps Activity and its deletion or auto-delete settings. Turning Memory off stops one use of those chats; it does not erase the underlying history. [1][2]

If the goal is to remove conversations, open Settings & help → Activity or go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini, then delete the specific activity, a day, a custom date range or all activity. Google says removal from view begins immediately, followed by a process designed to delete the data safely from its storage systems. [2]

How do you make Gemini forget a specific fact?

Google’s documented method is more demanding than switching Memory off: delete every past chat containing that information from Gemini Apps Activity. Deleting only one of several conversations can leave another source chat available to Memory. [1]

Google warns that there may be a short delay before deleted material stops affecting personalized responses. Correcting Gemini inside a chat can improve what it says, but correction is not the same as deleting the conversations that contain the old information. Google does not document a universal fact-by-fact saved-memory list on this help page. [1]

This yields a simple process:

  1. Search recent chats and Gemini Apps Activity for the fact or topic.
  2. Delete every relevant conversation.
  3. Allow for the short documented delay.
  4. Ask Gemini whether it used information from past chats when checking a later response.

What if Gemini learned the information from Gmail, Photos or another Connected App?

Connected Apps create a two-source problem. Gemini may know something because it appears in a past chat, because it can retrieve it from a connected service, or both. Google says that removing this information from future personalization can require two actions: [1][3]

  1. Delete all chats containing the information.
  2. Disconnect the app that can provide it again.

Disconnecting the app alone can leave the information in past chats. Deleting the chats alone can allow Gemini to find the information again in the still-connected app. Google also says that updating or deleting source data—such as an email in Gmail or a photo in Google Photos—may take days to affect the Gemini experience. [1][3]

Current Personal Intelligence documentation lists eligible sources including Contacts, Google Workspace services such as Gmail, Calendar and Drive, Google Photos where available, Search services, and YouTube. Google Wallet is listed as US-only, and Google Photos has country and territory limits. Availability is not universal. [3]

Memory vs Keep Activity

Memory controls whether Gemini personalizes responses from past chats. Keep Activity controls whether future Gemini activity is saved to the Google Account and describes related product, retention and model-improvement behavior. Past-chat Memory requires Keep Activity to be on, so turning Keep Activity off makes that Memory feature unavailable—but the controls are still not interchangeable. [1][2]

When Keep Activity is off, future conversations do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. Google nevertheless says they remain saved with the account for up to 72 hours so it can provide the service, process feedback and help protect Google, users and the public. They are not used to improve Google’s AI models unless the user submits feedback. [2][5]

For a fuller comparison of these storage and training rules, see DECODISTA’s Gemini Temporary Chat vs Keep Activity guide.

What does “Turn off and delete activity” do?

The Activity page currently offers two choices:

  • Turn off changes future activity saving without selecting deletion of older saved activity.
  • Turn off and delete activity combines the setting change with the activity-deletion flow.

Do not treat the first option as retroactive erasure. Review existing Gemini Apps Activity separately, and choose the deletion range that matches the material you want removed. [2]

What does turning Personal Intelligence off for one chat do?

Google is gradually rolling out a per-chat Personal Intelligence switch, so it may not appear on every eligible account yet. When available, open Tools in the text box and turn Personal Intelligence off. For that conversation, Gemini will not personalize using past-chat Memory, Instructions for Gemini or Connected Apps. [3]

This is not a global Memory switch. Gemini can still use earlier messages in the same conversation as context. The setting stays with that chat, while a new chat starts with Personal Intelligence on by default. The conversation can still be saved to Gemini Apps Activity and later contribute to personalization elsewhere. [3]

Personal Intelligence off vs Temporary Chat

If you want to…Better control
Keep a normal chat but remove personalization sources for that chatTurn Personal Intelligence off for the chat, if available.
Avoid saving the conversation to normal Gemini Apps ActivityUse Temporary Chat.
Stop use of past-chat Memory across future conversationsTurn Memory off.
Remove old information Gemini learnedDelete every relevant past chat.
Stop future access to a Connected App sourceDisconnect that Connected App; also delete relevant chats if they contain the information.

Turning Personal Intelligence off for one chat changes its personalization inputs; Temporary Chat changes the conversation’s history, personalization and model-improvement treatment. They should not be described as the same mode. [3][5][6]

What about Temporary Chat?

Temporary Chats do not appear in normal recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity, do not provide personalized responses, and do not save information for future personalization. Google says they are not used to train its AI models. [5][6]

Temporary does not mean zero retention. Google retains these chats with the account for 72 hours to respond, protect its systems and users, and handle documented service needs. Temporary Chat is available on Gemini web and mobile for eligible personal accounts, but not in every Gemini surface. [5][6]

Why can’t I see Gemini Memory?

Check the documented requirements before looking for a workaround:

  • You must be at least 18.
  • You must use a personal Google Account, not a work, school or supervised account.
  • Keep Activity must be on.
  • You must be using a supported surface.
  • Memory is unavailable in certain experiences, including Gems and Live chats.
  • Other Personal Intelligence features, including the per-chat switch, are still rolling out and may not have reached the account. [1][3][4]

Google also documents country-specific limits for some Connected Apps. Seeing Memory does not prove that every Personal Intelligence source is available in the same account or region. [3]

Can Gemini use sensitive information from Memory?

Google says Memory can learn from what users share in past chats. That makes the input choice important: avoid putting confidential information into an ordinary personalized conversation when you would not want it considered later. [1][5]

Temporary Chat is the documented option for a one-off conversation that should not use or create personalization. It still has the 72-hour retention described above, so it is not a promise that Google keeps nothing. [5][6]

A simple privacy-control map

GoalControl or action
Stop past-chat personalizationTurn Memory off.
Remove one remembered topic or factDelete every past chat containing it.
Remove information available through a Connected AppDelete relevant chats and disconnect the app.
Stop future chats appearing in normal ActivityTurn Keep Activity off, or use Temporary Chat for a one-off conversation.
Avoid personalization in only one normal chatTurn Personal Intelligence off for that chat, if available.
Have a one-off chat without normal personalization or ActivityUse Temporary Chat and remember the 72-hour retention rule.

No single row is a universal “delete everything” button. The correct action depends on whether the information exists in chat history, a connected source, saved instructions or more than one place. [1–6]

FAQ

Does turning off Gemini Memory delete past chats?

No. It stops Gemini from using past-chat Memory for future personalization. Delete conversations separately through Gemini Apps Activity if you want to remove them. [1][2]

How do I make Gemini forget something about me?

Google says to delete every past chat containing that information from Gemini Apps Activity. There may be a short delay before the deleted information stops affecting personalization. [1]

Do I need to delete every chat containing the information?

Yes, under Google’s current instructions. Deleting only one relevant conversation may leave the same information in another past chat. [1]

Is Gemini Memory the same as Keep Activity?

No. Memory controls past-chat personalization. Keep Activity controls activity saving and related retention and model-improvement behavior. Memory requires Keep Activity to be on. [1][2][5]

What happens if Keep Activity is off?

Past-chat Memory becomes unavailable, and future chats do not appear in normal Gemini Apps Activity. Google still retains those conversations with the account for up to 72 hours for documented service, feedback and protection purposes. [1][2][5]

Does turning Personal Intelligence off for one chat stop that chat from being saved?

No. Google says the chat can still be saved to Gemini Apps Activity. Use Temporary Chat when the goal is to keep a one-off conversation out of normal Activity. [3]

Does Temporary Chat use Gemini Memory?

No. Google says Temporary Chat does not provide personalized responses or save information for future personalization. It can still be retained for 72 hours. [5][6]

What if Gemini learned something from Gmail or Google Photos?

Google says you may need to delete every chat containing the information and disconnect the relevant app. Doing only one can leave the other source available, and source changes may take days to appear in Gemini. [1][3]

Why is Gemini Memory missing from my account?

The feature requires an eligible adult using a personal Google Account with Keep Activity on and a supported surface. Work, school and supervised accounts are excluded, and some Personal Intelligence features are still rolling out. [1][3][4]

Can I ask Gemini whether it used past chats?

Yes. Google suggests asking, “Did you use any info from past chats?” This can identify whether a response used that personalization source; it is not a substitute for deleting relevant conversations. [1]
